A demanding standard of fairness

Qur'an 4 : 135 calls for justice even when truthful testimony goes against oneself, parents or relatives. Qur'an 5 : 8 warns that hostility towards a group must not lead to injustice. Taken together, these passages challenge two common sources of bias: protecting people close to us and judging people we dislike unfairly.

What this means in an Indian setting

Suppose a disturbing video circulates after a neighbourhood dispute. A fair response asks when and where it was recorded, what happened before the clip began and whether the allegation is supported. A person's religious name does not prove either guilt or innocence. The same standard should apply whether the accused shares one's community or belongs to another.

This does not require pretending that all claims are equally strong. Evidence may support a clear conclusion. Fairness means reaching that conclusion through facts and a proper process rather than through community loyalty.

Justice and compassion together

Concern for victims should include listening seriously and helping them access support. Fair treatment of the accused should include resisting false accusations and collective punishment. Neither duty cancels the other. The Qur'anic verses do not instruct individuals to become a private court or punish people on the basis of online allegations.

The teaching can also be applied to less dramatic choices: selecting a student fairly, paying a worker correctly or admitting that a friend behaved badly. A person may feel anger and still have a duty not to distort the facts. Islam presents justice as an obligation before God, including when it is inconvenient. Whether religious or not, a reader can understand why that standard is essential for trust between communities.

Qur’anic verses

Qur'an 4 : 135

You who believe, stand firmly for justice as witnesses for God, even against yourselves, your parents or relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, God has a greater claim over both. Do not follow personal desires instead of justice. If you distort your testimony or turn away, God is fully aware of what you do.

Qur'an 5 : 8

You who believe, stand firmly for God as fair witnesses. Do not let hatred of a people lead you to injustice. Be just; that is nearer to mindfulness of God. Be mindful of God, who is fully aware of what you do.
