Two words with a wide scope
Halal means permitted in Islam. Haram means prohibited. Although these words often appear in discussions about meat, they also apply to earning, trade and conduct. Honest income can be described as halal; theft and bribery are prohibited. The words describe religious judgments, not labels for the worth of a whole community.
Food is one part of the subject
Fruit, vegetables, grains and pulses are ordinarily permissible foods. A processed product may raise further questions about ingredients or preparation. The Qur'an names prohibited foods, including pork, blood and animals that die without the prescribed slaughter, and prohibits intoxicants. Necessity is also addressed in the text; the rule should not be described without recognising its stated exceptions.
Halal and vegetarian are different descriptions. A halal product may contain meat. A vegetarian product is not automatically suitable for every Muslim dietary requirement if it includes another prohibited ingredient. Nor does a halal label mean that a food is healthier or more nutritious.
Conduct matters too
The Qur'an's ethical limits include wrongful taking of property, gambling, backbiting and other harm. Backbiting means speaking about someone in a harmful way behind their back; it is not a ban on responsibly reporting abuse or seeking help. The point is to protect people's rights and dignity.
Readers may ask why a particular food is prohibited. A Muslim may first understand the restriction as obedience to God. An explanation need not invent a scientific claim that the food is always uniquely dangerous. Questions about health require their own evidence.
Whose rule is being explained
These terms explain Islamic practice. A non-Muslim reader is not being asked to adopt the same dietary rules. In shared settings, accurate labels, honest answers about ingredients and respect for different choices help people eat and work together without unnecessary suspicion.
Qur’anic verses
Qur'an 2 : 168
People, eat what is permitted and good on the earth. Do not follow the footsteps of Satan, for he is your clear enemy.

Qur'an 5 : 3
Forbidden to you are animals found dead, blood, pork, and animals dedicated to anyone other than God; animals killed by strangling, beating, falling or goring, and those partly eaten by wild animals, except what you are able to slaughter properly before it dies; and animals sacrificed on stone altars. Also forbidden is seeking decisions through divining arrows. These are sinful practices. Today those who disbelieve have lost hope of overcoming your religion, so do not fear them; fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you and chosen Islam as your religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger, without intending sin, will find God Forgiving and Merciful.

Qur'an 5 : 90
You who believe, intoxicants, gambling, idols and divining arrows are foul practices from Satan's work. Avoid them so that you may succeed.

Qur'an 5 : 91
Through intoxicants and gambling, Satan seeks to create hostility and hatred among you and turn you away from remembering God and from prayer. Will you then stop?

Qur'an 49 : 12
You who believe, avoid much suspicion, for some suspicion is sinful. Do not spy on or backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of their dead brother? You would find it disgusting. Be mindful of God. God accepts repentance and is Merciful.
