One Creator for everyone

Allah is the Arabic name for God. In Islamic teaching, this is the Creator of every person and the whole universe, not a deity limited to one race or country. The Arabic word ilah can refer to a deity; Allah functions as the name of the one God. In this use it has no ordinary plural or feminine counterpart. This fits the Islamic emphasis on the oneness of God. English-speaking Muslims also use the word God.

What oneness means

Tawheed means God's oneness and the duty to worship Him alone. Chapter 112 of the Qur'an describes God as one, independent of all need, neither born nor having offspring, and without an equal. The teaching rules out partners who share His divinity.

God is not understood as a human being, a physical object or a being dependent on food or rest. The Qur'an says that nothing is comparable to Him and that neither sleep nor drowsiness overtakes Him.

Why the distinction matters

A Muslim praying to God is addressing the Creator, rather than a representation of Him. Prophets, saints, religious leaders and sacred places do not share God's status. Calling God ‘He’ follows the grammar of religious language; it does not mean that God is biologically male.

The words Allah and God can refer to the same intended Creator across languages without making all religious doctrines identical. For example, Islam does not share Christian teaching about the Trinity. A respectful explanation can recognise both shared language and real differences.

God: no deity is worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. Everything in the heavens and on the earth belongs to Him. Who can intercede with Him without His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them. They grasp nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent.
